The Hook: Professional wrestling rarely utilizes the double knockout finish, but when executed correctly, it sets up massive pay-per-view stakes. On May 12, 2021, two of AEW’s top stars failed to answer the referee’s ten-count. This chaotic finish forced Kenny Omega into a corner and set the stage for an incredible Triple Threat match for the World Championship.

The History: Kenny Omega was running roughshod over the roster alongside Don Callis. To establish a true number one contender for Double or Nothing, AEW management booked an Eliminator match. The bout pitted the aggressive, high-flying PAC against the wildly popular Orange Cassidy.

Key Moments:

• The Clash of Styles: PAC delivered heavy, punishing offense, but Cassidy continually frustrated him with his signature evasiveness and rope-a-dope strategy.

• The Interference: Late in the contest, Don Callis grabbed a microphone and began shouting from the stage to pull referee Aubrey Edwards’ attention away from the ring.

• The Strike: With the referee distracted, Kenny Omega slipped between the ropes and blasted PAC in the head with his heavyweight championship belt.

• The Finish: Both competitors were left knocked out cold on the canvas. Aubrey Edwards administered the ten-count, and neither man could stand, resulting in an official Double Knockout.

• The Announcement: Tony Schiavone immediately appeared to deliver the bad news to Omega: he would have to defend his title against both men at the pay-per-view.

Why It Matters: The finish was a brilliant piece of villainous booking. Omega and Callis attempted to cheat the system to ensure an easy night at Double or Nothing, but their interference only made things harder. It perfectly paid off the months of tension and led to one of the most celebrated World Championship Triple Threat matches in company history.
